When recovering from an illness, operation, accident, bereavement or traumatic experience, or if caring for someone who is, it can be tough – not just on you, but also those around you. We want to be there for our members at such times of vulnerability and offer a helping hand where we can.

Just one of the ways in which we can offer practical help is through convalescence and carer support. Our approach is holistic, with the first step being to offer a kind, listening ear to better understand your situation.

The next step is to use our experience to pinpoint ways in which the Oddfellows can best offer help to you, your family and the main carer. This could be delivered through one, or a combination, of the Society’s care and welfare benefits.

Our convalescence and carer support comprises ‘three benefits in one’ – Convalescence Home Benefit*, Carer’s Respite Benefit* and Convalescence Care Benefit*.

Convalescence and carer support, and its three component benefits, is available to members from the start of their third year of membership and can be accessed every other year if qualifying medically. Unless you are applying as a carer, we would need your GP to complete a medical questionnaire confirming that you would benefit from convalescence support.

Applying for convalescence and carer support

If you’re a member and eligible, your first step is to contact your Branch Secretary – you can find their contact details by using our Branch Finder – or contact the Care and Welfare Helpline. To access the member-only 0800 number, members can sign in to the Members’ Area, call our Membership team or refer to their Member Handbook.
