Hardwick Hall is the legacy of a woman who had the vision and wealth and the sheer audacity to commission a house that still takes peoples breath away Elizabeth, Countess of Shrewsbury fondly known as Bess of Hardwick (1527- 1608) The golden stonework and sparkling expanse of glass looks down on the ruins of the first attempt and is full of the delights from Elizabethan embroidery to forties furnishings.
