Walks, Social | Lord Byron Branch
Thursday 20 August 2026 at 1.00pm
I am writing to confirm our walk and bring your own picnic at Horniman Gardens. I have set out full details below and look forward to seeing anyone that can make it along. Please note that this is instead of meeting at Stanstead Lodge at 2pm.
With stunning views across London, the 16 acres of Horniman Gardens are perfect for spotting urban wildlife, architectural treasures, or just a good place to unwind. Visit the Bee Garden, the Wildlife Garden, the Meadow Fields, the Prehistoric Garden.
Meet at the park entrance at Horniman Gardens, 100 London Road, Forest Hill, London SE23 3PQ.
Directions

The gardens are very well served by local bus services, and there are direct buses to the Horniman from around south London, including Brixton (P4), Catford (185), East Croydon (197), Lewisham (185/P4) and Peckham (197/363) and by direct bus from central London (route 176) and Victoria (185). The closest bus stops are:
176, 185, 197, 356, P4 - stop outside the Museum and Gardens on London Road.
122 - stops on Dartmouth Road.

See the route from Forest Hill Station by bus.
Train
The Horniman is a five-to-ten-minute walk from Forest Hill station and is signposted from the platform 1 exit (towards London Road, not Perry Vale). Please be aware this walk is uphill, although there are several bus services which stop at both the station and Museum.
Forest Hill is on the Windrush line between Highbury and Islington and West Croydon / Crystal Palace/Clapham Junction line which offers a high frequency service from North, East and South London.
The station is also well served by trains from Central London, Croydon and Surrey. Direct train services run from London Bridge (approximately every half an hour, journey time 20 minutes) linking with the Northern and Jubilee lines, and London Victoria linking with the Victoria, Circle and District lines, East Croydon, West Croydon, Sutton, Purley and Caterham.
Car
There is no onsite parking, other than limited parking for Blue Badge holders.
A pay-and-display car park is available locally behind Sainsbury’s, and there are two pay-and-display car parks at Forest Hill station (one at the front, one at the back).
There are usually free spaces in the road opposite Horniman's Museum - Sydenham Rise.
Please bring your own picnic.
Weather
The weather forecast is sunny periods with the odd shower in the afternoon with a temperature of 19-21C/68F. You may wish to dress appropriately for the weather.
Accessibility
The Gardens are both wheelchair friendly with accessible toilets. The Gardens have tarmac or concrete paths throughout. Although some of the paths are very steep, we shall try to avoid those and wet grass.
Toilets are available in the Gardens near the Bandstand, in the Café and the Museum.
Please let me know that you are coming so that we know who to look out and wait for. I look forward to seeing you.
