Calling adventurous retirees
Updated: 28 Jan 2025
Oddfellows branches across the nation are inviting all retirees who want to explore their local surroundings, but might be stuck with who to go with, to join them.
The more the merrier
Members at Ormskirk and Southport Oddfellows, for example, often set out to explore local attractions, dine out, or enjoy walks together.
The Branch’s Social Event Organiser, Judith Catton, believes that trying new things is better in good company. She says her group is a ready-made set of friends to adventure with, and they are always looking for newcomers to join them.

Judith added: “Most of our members are retired, so they find they have more free time to do things that they’ve not had time to do before. However, sometimes their friends are still working, or they don’t have that like-minded person to share the experience with.
“That’s where we come in. We always have space for new faces. In fact, the more the merrier!”
The group has recently visited Ordsall Hall in Salford, had a mini break in Whitby, sailed on Chester River Cruises, and took a trip to Liverpool Docks.
They also recently tried croquet for the first time, and have many more trips and excursions on the horizon, including visits to Gorton Monastery, The Rock n Roll Panto, Chatsworth at Christmas, and various lunches which always prove popular.
Collectively, around 600 social events are held by the Oddfellows' branches up and down the country each month.
It’s amazing how many hidden gems I’ve discovered.
“Visiting new places together is a great way to get to know new people as there’s always something to talk about,” Judith added. “Members often come back discussing a show they’ve seen or restaurant we’ve tried, or a local fact they’ve learnt along the way.”

Pam Leckie, from Southport, has been a member of Ormskirk and Southport Oddfellows for over 10 years, and enjoys realising the pleasures that are on her doorstep. She said: “I can’t think of a better way to spend my day than getting out and about in good company. It’s amazing how many hidden gems I’ve discovered.
“I’ve only just retired full time, so I am looking forward to even more great days out and new experiences. I don’t know how I had the time to work!”
