The Tommy on the hill: two brothers in the Suffolk Regiment during World War One - Sudbury
Talks & Demos | Bury St Edmunds & Colchester District Branch
Wednesday 13 May 2026 at 2.30pm
Dr David J. Appleby is an award-winning historian of the Civil Wars and Restoration (as well as being an Oddfellow), but this talk is more personal: using personal family documents and artefacts, this the story of how his maternal grandfather, Reginald Fookes ended up in the Suffolk Regiment in time for the battle of Cambrai in November 1917, and what happened to him after that. We’ll also hear about Reg’s brother Harold, who was a Regimental Sergeant Major in the Suffolks during the First World War.
