Join us for a day out including a trip to the Nottingham Arboretum which is a refreshing and peaceful experience, it is ideal for anyone seeking tranquility amidst nature the Arboretum offers a charming escape with its rich greenery, diverse plant life, and scenic landscapes.
As you enter the Arboretum, you'll be greeted by well-maintained pathways winding through lush lawns, mature trees, and colorful flowerbeds. The park is home to a wide variety of over 800 trees, including rare and exotic species, making it a great spot for tree lovers or those interested in botany.
One of the highlights of the Arboretum is its Victorian layout, with spacious lawns and ornamental features like a large central pond, rustic bridges, and peaceful seating areas. There’s a lovely bandstand .
For those with an interest in history or architecture, the Arboretum also offers insight into the local heritage. It was originally designed in the mid-19th century as part of Nottingham’s early civic green spaces and has been lovingly preserved. Along with the plant life, the park’s history is reflected in its statues, including a memorial to Nottingham's famous poet, Lord Byron, and other notable figures.
There is the option to then visit the Church Cemetary also know as the Rock Cemetary which is a good example of a High Victorian (1856) commercial cemetery. The site combines elements of the garden cemetery with the picturesque taste to create a most unusual design and layout. The dramatic landscape, exploiting rocky caves, chasms and outcrops, survives intact and in good condition. The cemetery contains a good collection of funerary monuments which reflect the development of Nottingham during the late 19th and early 20th century. An extensive group of 'Guinea Graves' survives within St Anne's Valley, which forms a separate enclosure, reflecting the social history of Nottingham. Following our visits we can take lunch at Cods Scollops on Mansfield Road, Carrington, which is just a short walk away.
