Music was my first love...

Andrew Silk shares his love of classic rock music. What would your top 10 rock songs be?

By Andrew Silk

…and it will be my last. So sang John Miles many moons ago back in 1976 whilst on his way to number three in the UK singles chart with his hit song ‘Music’.

Over the years there have been many great songs released, and it got me thinking about what are the best classic rock songs of all time. Well, the simple answer to this question is that there is no definitive answer – we all have our favourites. Whether it’s songs that remind us of special events in our lives, songs that were the soundtrack of our youth, or just plain good old fashioned music that gets us dancing.

So perhaps the best place to start is to look at some of ‘The Best Of’ lists from magazines and TV countdown shows and go from there. We can all probably guess the bands or artists that we will see dominate on any such lists, the likes of Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Beatles, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, The Who to name but a few, but to choose the songs – well that’s much harder to do. But why not try?

The worst thing that can happen is that you will re-discover some of the soundtrack of your youth, and for many of us that can’t be a bad thing!

Top ten classic rock songs

  • Moondance – Van Morrison
  • Layla – Derek & The Dominoes
  • Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen
  • Free Bird – Lynyrd Skynyrd
  • Stairway To Heaven – Led Zeppelin
  • Baba O’Riley – The Who
  • Johnny B. Goode – Chuck Berry
  • Satisfaction – The Rolling Stones
  • Paranoid – Black Sabbath
  • Hotel California – The Eagles

But what do you think?

There’s no Beatles song on there – arguably the band that did the most to change the face of music – likewise there’s no Bowie. There’s nothing from the more modern ‘megabands’ such as U2, Radiohead or Coldplay and there’s a complete absence of female singers.
