After months of fundraising, the Dover-based Cinque Ports Warden Branch of the Oddfellows has raised £1,045 for Parkinson’s UK.
Immediate Past Provincial Grand Master, Cynthia Tucker, and members of the Oddfellows' Cinque Ports Warden Branch, present Helena Cook from Parkinson's UK with cheque for £1,045
The local friendship society chose Parkinson’s UK as their Chairman’s charity of the year after seeing first-hand the devastating effects of the nervous system disorder. This amount was raised by Oddfellows members and guests over the past 12 months through their monthly coffee mornings, fundraising raffles and book sales, and will contribute towards further life-saving research.
Cynthia Tucker, Immediate Past Provincial Grand Master, said: “I suggested the Branch raise money for Parkinson’s UK after a friend was diagnosed. Seeing him struggle with his tremors, and the onus placed on his wife, I wanted to do something that would help more people in the future. The Branch came together and raised this fantastic amount of money which will increase awareness, provide more support for patients and their families, and fund future research.”
Celia Powell, Chair to the Folkestone and Dover Branch of Parkinson's UK, commented on the donation: “It’s wonderful how the community has come together to raise such an amazing amount. The money raised will help the local branch to continue singing and exercise classes at Whitfield Village Hall. It will also help to fund outings and meals out for people with Parkinson’s locally, which help develop a sense of wellbeing. Donations like this also mean that we’re able to ensure that our research continues, and continue to make sure that nobody has to face Parkinson’s alone.”
With over 200 years’ experience of helping its community, the Oddfellows’ Cinque Ports Warden District Branch is no stranger to caring for its members, and understands the important role charities play in society.
In 2018, the Society raise £184,000 for various good causes across the UK.
Cynthia added: "We’re always hosting events – some social, some fundraising, but all designed to encourage friendship and a strong sense of community. If you’d like to come along and give us a try, you’re more than welcome!”
